Sumaya batters HB Polo, 15-8 in Queens Cup play

By Alex Webbe

Sumaya atoned for its opening 10-9 overtime loss to Cortium by destroying HB Polo, 15-8 Wednesday afternoon at Coworth Park.

Sumaya galloped out to a 3-1 lead after the opening chukker and scored four unanswered goals in the second chukker for a 7-1, six goal advantage.

By the end of the fourth Sumaya was nine goals ahead, 14-5. They coasted through the final two chukkers of play to register an impressive 15-8 victory. Sumaya improved its record to 1-1, but will have to wait until Friday’s results of the Talandracas vs. Cortium joust to assess their prospects. Sumaya is scheduled to play Talandracas on Tuesday in what might be a playoff deciding contest.

As play continues in the 2013 Cartier Queens Cup at the Guards Polo Club in England, the favorites are beginning to emerge from the pack.

El Remanso has scored consecutive wins over Dubai (18-17) and Enigma (9-8), and currently sits atop League I with a 2-0 record. Virtually assured of a quarterfinal slot, El Remanso has one game remaining against Emlor (1-1) on Friday in preliminary play.

League II is led by an undefeated Zacara team (2-0). An impressive 13-8 opening win over Twelve Oaks was followed up by an 11-10 win over a strong Les Lions team. Zacara’s final preliminary match is against EFG Bank Aravali (1-1) on Sunday.

Leagues III and IV will shake out over the next two day when the undefeated Black Bears (1-0) meet the undefeated UAE team (1-0) on Thursday. In League IV play, Talandracas (1-0) and Cortium (1-0) are slated to meet on Friday.
